Introducing the Women's History Month Film Contest

Ever since Alice Guy-Blaché made her directorial debut in the early 1900s, women have been paving the way for each other to thrive in the film industry. Now in the 21st century, female creators continue to bring their talents into and exert great influence over all areas of video production.

While it’s important to honor industry trailblazers, it’s also critical to recognize the filmmakers and artists who are actively shaping the future of film and music. So to celebrate today’s female creators, we’re launching an exciting new contest.

The Women's History Month film contest

As of Friday March 11th, our Women’s History Month contest will be live on Instagram and open to all female-identifying U.S. creators. To enter, you’ll need to create and share a piece of original content using a song from our Powerful Women playlist. 

Then just post the content on Instagram, tag @soundstripemusic and use the hashtag #MakeItSoundstripe — before 12am CST on March 31, 2022. 

Once the contest closes, writer and director Alanna Brown will judge all of the submissions and select the first, second, and third place winners. These winners will be announced on April 8th and receive the following prizes:

First Place

• Blackmagic Pocket 4K camera
• One free year of the Soundstripe Creator plan
• A Storyteller membership to Women in Film

Second Place

• One free year of the Soundstripe Creator plan
• A Creative membership to Women in Film

Third Place

• One free year of the Soundstripe Creator plan
• An Ally membership to Women in Film

Bearing all this in mind, here are the specific steps you’ll take to enter into the contest.

How to enter the contest

1. Sign up for Soundstripe using this link and the discount code HOPE to get your first month of the Creator Monthly plan for only $1. (Note: There’s a 200 person sign up cap with this code, so act fast.)
   
   
2. Create a video or edit an existing one using a song from our Powerful Women playlist.
   
   
3. Tag “@soundstripemusic” in your post on Instagram and use the hashtag #MakeItSoundstripe.

Remember that the contest closes on March 31, 2022, so you only have a limited time to create and submit your video entry on Instagram.

Meet Alanna Brown, filmmaker and our contest judge

Writer/Director Alanna Brown’s directorial and screenwriting debut, Trees of Peace, won top jury prizes at the 2021 Santa Barbara International Film Festival (Panavision Spirit Award and ADL Stand Up Award), the Phoenix Film Festival (Best Director, Best Picture), and the American Black Film Festival (Best Director, Best Narrative Feature, John Singleton Award for Best First Feature). 

Alanna recently adapted Sharon Guskin’s novel, The Forgetting Time for New Line, and rewrote the Vietnamese horror remake, Grave Hill for CJ Entertainment. In television, she wrote an episode for the STARZ spinoff of the critically acclaimed film, Blindspotting created by Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs, and also wrote alongside Helen Hunt for a Comedy in development at FX. 

Alanna was named to the Black List, the Hit List, and the Young & Hungry List with her second feature script, The 29th Accident. She's currently setting up her second and third features as writer/director and has two TV projects in development.
